Know the facts
What is leukemia?
Leukemia is a cancer of the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. The main types — AML, ALL, CLL and CML — behave very differently, and genetic and molecular test results increasingly decide which treatments and trials fit.

Why clinical trials matter
Today’s standard treatments exist because people took part in earlier trials. According to the National Cancer Institute, people are living longer lives thanks to results of past cancer clinical trials (NCI). Yet only about 7% of U.S. adults with cancer join a treatment trial (Unger et al., JCO 2024) — often because no one told them a trial was available. Trials are research and are not guaranteed to help; your doctor and the study team can explain possible risks and benefits.
